LITTLE SHOP OF HEDWIG shabby chic from florida to bc
WARNING: this is a Sunday posting much like a Sunday drive .. for your enjoyment.

even a lemonade a sit back and enjoy the ride.
Way too long ago I mentioned a fabulous shabby chic furniture shop we
found on our vacation while in Florida. I had seen some adverts for a few antique
shops in the Grand Central district of St. Petersburg, only 10 mins from our beach side getaway.
As we pulled up to the curb, my involvement in the conversation
about our days plans dropped along with my jaw.
My eyes glazed over and I couldnt get out of the seat belt fast enough.
But then everything slowed down, including Georges voice trying to get my attention again.
"OH MY GAWD LOOK" I said to him, like he had no clue what power had
taken my mind, body, and soul over in those few seconds.
This wasnt on the list, the store next door was, even the one across the street was on the list.
How could this little shop not be on every list out there.

As I write this post I am seriously reminded of how child like I felt
during the whole visit. How I even managed to take pictures is a miracle.
Once we made it thru the front door, George jokingly announces to the 2 ladies over seeing
the shop that I was all theirs and hed be back in a few hours to pick me up.
Eiffel tower images on french chairs, white distressing, double welting,
luscious pink rugs under foot, Im thinking at this point *this could be better then the beach*
I can still hear George in the back ground chatting with the ladies, joking as he always does,
as Im running around touching everything with one hand and snapping pics with the other.
So many benches upholstered in almost every vintage fabric we all covet.
Mad Hatter Table for Tea?
By now I havent heard Georges voice in awhile,
I must have made the full journey into this marvelous land.
Look at that wonderful headboard tucked in behind the dresser.
It looks like something from far under the sea reminiscent of Poseidons crown.
Can you see the touch of whimsy sitting in this chair?
It would be so easy to imagine youre a character in a fairy tale or nursery rhythm
Ring a round the rosie, pocket full of posey .....
Flowers over head.
Soft blues, yellows, greens, pinks and of course whites greeted me every time
I rounded a corner or entered another room.
Maybe I could get to Narnia thru this wardrobe.
Is that the lamp post where Lucy met the fawn?
Im sure this is officially Tinker bells bathroom chandelier.
I hear the shop ladies still laughing at Georges jokes,
and then I recall where I actually am.
But before I give in and leave my fantasy
One last daydream about Sleeping Beauty.
Now to that option I mentioned at the started of this LONG journey,
and if you have made it this far you deserve another treat.

Step 1: Assemble the Materials.

From Tool to Toolbox
New Tool from Veritas
Have you ever been working on a project and wished you had a certain tool to make your job easier or more efficient? More specifically a tool you already know does not yet exist? The inventor side of most wood workers I know have this happen to them all of the time; some wish they had a certain hand tool while others take the lead and go about building their own. I like you am no different and have designed and invented new and wonderful tool ideas here in my shop~ at least on paper that is...Im really going to try to make up a few prototypes of some ideas I have rolling around the ol book shelf in my brain and will keep you posted when I do. One early morning last year I had one of these moments of clarity and came up with what I thought would be a great extension of a common wooden bodied spokeshave. I thought about combining the mechanical advantages of a spokeshave set-up with the width of a draw knife. I thought that having a wider handle set up on a spokeshave and the ability to get a rowing style grip would be beneficial to the piece I was shaping at the time.
Well needless to say I thought about the idea but never did get around to making one. Fast forward eight months and it seems that someone over at Veritas tools had a similar idea. ( ahh, just when I was getting ready to conquer the hand tool market! )
The new Veritas Large Spokeshave has just been introduced and Id love to hear from you if you have one, used one or just your thoughts on the tool itself. Im curious to see if it will indeed feel like a draw knife, having the extra weight and size but the luxury of fine tuning the iron for final smoothing as well as rough work.

More News From The Metal Shop
After a short break for some odds and ends .. fireplace screens, a couple of repairs, a very short one step railng, and some work on a couple more cockatoo chairs, Sam has headed into another big railing project with his builder friend Scott Thompson. This design is one loosely based on a previous project for a contemporary house Scott built in 2008.
These are the first two completed sections and Sam and Jim oiled them up before they left today. I havent been to the house or seen the full drawing, but these two 7 sections will be installed next week and measurements will then be taken for the other 7 section that will connect them and complete the open balcony area. Then I understand there are at least two angled railings that go down the stairs ... I cant wait to see the finished house ....
Heres an end view showing the half posts that will bolt to the inset beams at the ends of the open section. The railings jut out from the posts on short angles so they can attach to the vertical edges of the beam which will provide a secure and rigid connection. Apparently there are some other angled elements on the floor below that suggested this interesting and artistic concept. Ill have to see it when its all finished.
As usual, Sam made the drawings and then Trevor cut a spacing jig on the cnc that enables Sam to quickly and accurately weld up the pieces.....
The angled jigs were a little trickier, but a lot smaller and worked slick ...
