Project ideas for the home and garden
Its been a quiet week for me online. My dad came out for a visit turning this week into a vacation of sorts. But we did manage to put together a quick project for tomorrows video.
Heres what some of you have been up to. Definitely a lot of springtime projects getting made.
Last year I made a picnic tote for storing paper plates and a keeping paper napkins from blowing away. Bill Wilson made this one double sided for holding condiments and utensils.
Finally, I wanted to show off some projects from 16-year-old Connor Mcallister in Australia. He recently got a lathe and turned this honey dipper. I told him that is one of those projects I think about every single time i turn something on my lathe. One of these days maybe Ill actually make one!

Heres a project Ive recently added to my to-do list. Ron Ward made this sign post for his yard with all different sign shapes pointing to important and memorable places in his life. I just love this idea.

Of course, just because its spring doesnt mean you cant make indoor projects! Gregory Morel made one of my charging stations using plywood and exotic lumber. That combination is always interesting.

Connor also took and old wardrobe and converted it into an aviary for his grandfather using pallet wood for the doors. Way to go man.

THE CRYSTAL OCTOPUS jens chandelier
Most who read my blog and follow my adventures
already know I love working with wood but I also enjoy working with other vintage finds.
The other thing I am very proud of is the ability to take a friends needs
and desires and create it for them.
A very good client and now close friend has been seeking just the right chandelier.
It had to be large in diameter yet shallow in height for her lower ceilings.
The right one was just not available no matter where we looked.
So I told her to leave it with me and Ill see what I can do.
That is where the monster octopus road side chandelier came in.
This thing had so many arms and was in such disarray I could never quite count how many
arms there actually was. Finally when I started to take it apart I got the count of 21.

I have worked with lamps, chandeliers, and general light fixtures for many years and understand
they really are just bits and pieces of a jigsaw puzzle but together in a pleasing form.
You can mix and match all sorts of parts together.
I started with the center of the octopus which had 6 arms and began adding
decorative bits top and bottom. Its trial and error what will look good so
I continued rebuilding my jigsaw puzzle over and over till I found the pleasing shape I wanted.
Once she was built and painted came the many long hours of adding wonderful sparkling crystals.
I drilled holes for hanging hooks and hand tied beads in just the right places.
I only manage to do about 2-3 chandeliers in a year because
they take countless hours to fiddle with.
I would not show my friend the final look through emailed photos because I wanted to see
her reaction in person and getting a pictures of a chandelier that
actually looks as good as it does in person is difficult.
She said "Im so jealous, ... but its mine and I cant wait to get it home"
It really is a masterpiece and so beautiful in person. I hope I have taken the right photos to
share with you so you can see for yourself.

Leons Tea Box Part 3 Creation of the inner lid and completion
Hi Again,
Here is the box portion remounted on the lathe. This box will have an inner lid so it needs a lip created inside of the box for the inner lid to sit on and you can see it just inside the box. And this is another critical area: there needs to be just enough wood for the lid to sit on and the inner sides of the rim have to be parallel with the outside of the rim. Other wise the lid wont fit properly or it will fall into the box:
Ok, were on the home stretch. Ive taken the blank for the inner lid and mounted it on the lathe. Its going to need to have the face trued up and the diameter of the lid shaped to match the inside of the box exactly:
This photo was taken several minutes later. It fits perfectly:
Now I needed to hollow out the underside of the lid so I can re-mount it on the lathe and thats what Ive done in this photo. In the photograph you can see 4 concentric circles. Those circles represent the women in Leons life: his wife and his three daughters:
Ive turned over the lid and now Im ready to shape the top of it. It took about 30 minutes of careful turning to get the lid to fit properly underneath the outer lid:
And here are the results. This is the completed, assembled tea box:
This is the box with the outer lid off and the inner lid in place:
And here it is completely disassembled. You can see the inner lid in the left lower corner of the photograph:
And this turn is completed.
Im really tired and so Im going to put the finish on it tomorrow and Ill send photos and discussion of this part of the project tomorrow.
Well, my back is killing me and Ive been clobbered by mosquitoes so Im going to go and have some chocolate milk and sit down with the cats.
